The grinding your hearing is coming from what is referred to as the transmission or gearcase. We just had the same issue with our 10 year old top load Maytag washer. I replaced the gearcase and problem solved. I have another new gearcase that might fit your Whirlpool if you want to send me the model number I can let you know if it will fit your machine. It would save you from buying a new washer and give you a number of years of more service.
