A lot of wrong advice in here. I did mine in a patio villa and found it was all prewired for this. I found a red wire connected to nothing in the fan junction box. Hooked it to the light kit black wires and the light kit white wires to the other white wires in the box. Pulled the light switch from wall and found the other end of the red wire hooked to nothing. On the switch there was another red wire hooked to it, pulled it off and capped it with wire nut. Connected the red wire that was hooked to nothing to the switch. The switch now controls only the fan light. The bottom half of outlet has no power at all. Pulled the outlet out unhooked the red wire at the bottom and capped it off. Replaced the outlet with a new one without the top to bottom connecter tab broken off. Top and bottom of outlet now live all the time. If unsure call an electrician. I am not an electrician, but I have done home wiring and such for years and have worked with electricians before.
