Just in case you don't want to bother with saving the little styrofoam balls all year for potting plants, I use aluminum cans. Just bend them in half and place in the bottom instead of rocks, etc. Works great for drainage and makes the pots much easier to move. It doesn't matter which part of the can is exposed, either. If water gets into them, they just add moisture as the plant gets thirsty.
