Are you not aware that National Guard units were federalized by the U.S. government and sent to Iraq, Afganistan and other sandboxes. Last time I checked there weren't any deserts in North Dakota. In the very early days of the Viet Nam war a limited number of guard units were sent there. There weren't any jungles in North Dakota but units are sent to Panama for jungle training. The military trains for war in all kinds of climates and geographical area. It's called being prepared.
