In the South, Honey, Sugar, Darling, and Bless Your Little Heart can mean what they seem to mean, but they can also mean just the opposite, as in “I thought dog owners were supposed to pick up things like you from the lawn.” It’s been that way for at least a century, though these days, lots of people choose to say what they really think, in ruder language. It’s related to social class, quite often.
