I believe the author is starting with a false premise to justify her position. What she claims is teaching is more likely dealing with topics that come up from the students.

Real facts include murder, rape, executions, auto accidents, horrors of war among other things that may come up, but are not topics that should be taught to kids who are talking about tooth fairies.

If the village sun had a living breathing editor who did not take his/her marching orders from the developer the sun would not be the same paper.
