It bombed two years before Philadelphia Story was made, and she was called “box office poison.” That’s why she worked so hard to make Philadelphia Story a success. It was almost twenty years before Bringing Up Baby was recognized as a classic. Her comedies with Spencer Tracy are also fun. When I was in college, the film society at my school had a Screwball Comedy Festival that included about a dozen films, including those two. I’d never heard of Screwball Comedies. Watch as many as you can!
