I found a wiring diagram, might be right, not sure. However something you could try, with the key on and a near empty tank, see if you can manually lift the fuel sender while watching the gauge. It should go up and down smoothly, if not the sender may be bad. According to the diagram I found there is very little wiring associated with the fuel gauge, battery to switch to sender to gauge to ground.
