I used this guy. He caught several, sold me some traps and taught me how to use them.

This how I do it:
• GOPHERS DIY:
o Probe to find main horizontal tunnel. Usually off to one side of the mound.
o Remove 12 x 12 sod and dig down to main tunnel
o clear tunnel with long handle spoon
o rub dirt on hands
o set trap
o place about 8 inches into both sides of in tunnel
o shove spike ( eve troth spike) at an angle to tunnel and leaving some slack in the 1 foot chain,
o Do Not cover tunnel. Do not block light or cover trap with sand. Leave tunnel opens open. Gophers do not like light in their tunnel system and will come into the trap to close the tunnel.
o Leave opening 12x12 open and check chains to see if a gopher in the trap has tried to drag the trap and pulled the chain tight.
o Place dead gopher into the tunnel and close up. (They will leave an area with a dead gopher.)
o IF YOU CATCH A GOPHER CREATING A SAND PILE: Immediately place a trap in the tunnel used to expel the sand. Leave it open. The gopher will return to close the opening and trigger the trap.
