DUI Officer
As a retired police supervisor, I will relate what happens in the state I worked in. The officer, in the first offense will be offered to attend an alcohol rehab facility. A successful completion of the program will allow him to save his job, providing he signs a last chance agreement. This means, if there is a second incident, he is terminated forthwith. More serious charges would be handled differently. This would also apply in the case of substance abuse. These are illnesses and agencies have invested large sums of capital in each officer, and if they can rehab them. its a worth while solution for all involved. These issues are usually covered in a collective bargaining agreement between the agency and its employees.
