I work in an IT support group for a major trucking company and of the eight regular techs and six contractors non has an Apple system for their personal system. Our communications / art group for the most part have Apples and they are on their own for support. Apples have always been great for graphics work.
I think it all comes down to personal choice.
Also I have to agree with you about being outdated in 2 years. I just upgraded a few months ago the a 64 bit Vista computer. My old system is a P-3 @ 800 MHz that is 2001 vintage. I have upgraded the hard drive storage over the years but that is about it. I still use it on a daily basis.
My company tries to refresh their lap tops every 3 years and this is not because they are outdated but because of hardware failure such as display and system boards. Costs more to fix than buying a new one. For desktop units they shoot for 4 years.
