Hey, how dare you talk about the highly regarded senator from Taxachusetts!!!
Yea, the infamous Chappaquiddick Bridge, in which Senator Kennedy, drunk again, attempted to cross with Mary Jo Kopechne as a passenger in his Oldsmobile. After Kennedy drove the car off the bridge and into the water...he saved himself while leaving Mary Jo to fend for herself.
He went someplace to sleep it off and neglected to teleephone authorities.
Yes he never called 911 to report the accident. Him and his lawyer spent hours trying to find the right lie to tell the police. Kennedy wanted to report that she was the driver. His lawyer talked him into finally reporting the drunken accident and telling the police that he drove.
When divers finally went down to investigate they found Mary Jo's head in a weird stretched position. It was determined that she did not die immediately after the accident. There was an air pocket that she had reached and it was estimated that she died if lack of oxygen...not by drowning.
They determined that she was breathing in the car for up to 45 minutes waiting for someone to rescue her. While Kennedy was stumbling around and looking for his lawyer she was fighting for her life. What a terrible way to die.
If there was a silver lining to this tragedy.... The drunken accident prevented the USA from being subjected to a Kennedy Presidency.
Mary Jo Kepechne was declared dead July 18, 1969. May she rest in peace.
