Sounds like that might've been me. I don't open it with my cell phone. I have the gate card in a card holder attached to the back of my cell phone case. That way I don't have to remember to move it from my car to my golf cart, or worry about losing it. I never forget my cell phone, so the card automatically comes with me no matter which vehicle I use. I've been questioned about that a few times before, people have actually stopped me when I took the golf cart through the Walmart gate in the old section about it. I guess it's not a common thing. It just seemed like the common sense solution to "two vehicles, one card."
The gates absolutely mean something. They mean that no matter what you're doing, how much of a rush you're in, you have to actually STOP - before you continue. That is traffic control. That's why there's no clicker or bar code. You have to actually stop long enough to get that card up to the pad, and there's a good half-second delay before the gate actually goes up.
