They are native to this area. Being similar in look to the magnolia is possibly the reason they have fallen out of popularity. That, and that the required native tree being planted when building a house was a rule TV ignored and somehow was recently revised in the building codes.
I have to wonder if some people feel it is actually helpful to answer a post with " I don't know the answer, but you should ask (insert touted authority). Seems there are thousands of post replies on this site that are 'copy/paste'.
