Dogs and cats by nature have a far shorter lifespan than we do, and dealing with their passing is a necessary thing for any pet owner. When it happens I try to form the mindset that instead of being sad that the pet is gone, to instead concentrate on the good memories; to remember all that was given to us. It helps.

We recently lost our African Gray parrot, he was 42 years old and talked to us all day long, how we miss that, the first thing we heard in the morning when we came out of the bedroom was "Good morning", then when we started breakfast he would say can I have some toast. We have a picture of him and talk to him every day. I hope you find another special friend to spend your life with, there are many out there who need someone.
