From what I read; the original virus killed 10 out of ten mice, the new strain (omicron) killed 8 out of ten mice. This is where the 80% fatality rate comes from.

Thank you for the link. Have you been able to determine what their goal was? I heard one of the researchers say it is not gain of function because it had an 80% fataility rate, whereas the original killed 100% of the mice. What was the intended purpose. The only thing I can see worth taking risks like this would be in the search for new, better, safer vaccines. So many questions.
