As for birthdays, I am the opposite. As a VERY nearsighted child, I was very shy and had very low self-esteem. I was in 2nd grade before anyone realized I wasn't "slow", just blind. I hated anything that focused attention on me. Mostly, I hated my birthday. Still do. I think I am the only birthday ignorer in the world. My wife loves hers. Always make a fuss over her birthday.

Sorry to hear that. My mother had the flu when I was in her womb and I came out with a lot of developmental problems. A great English high school teacher saw something in me and groomed me by challenging me to read books like
Anna Karenina. A lot of this has to do with that teacher and my relationship with her and her family over the years as well as with a man named Mills Lane. Her family did give me a small Memorial Scholarship in the name of her then recently lost daughter. They had four daughters. Some of them have been in the news but back in Northern CA and Northern NV. I grew up from age 11 to 24 or so in Reno, Nevada. And not for NOTHING. We moved from the Milwaukee area to Reno, Nevada when I was about 11.
