I actually posted this on FB yesterday:

“Hhmmm moment… I’ve noticed over the last decade that politicians and media will change words, particularly country names, pronunciations. Different than I’d learned them In The previous 50 years… one of the first I noticed, and for some reason grated on my ears, was the pronunciation of Qatar. I learned and internalized it as “kuh-tar”. During President BHO’s administration, it started being pronounced “Cutter”…. I wanted to scream , “that’s not right!”… but, maybe I was wrong… I’m just a poor boy with a Boston public school education… conflict and doubt. Then today, a commercial came on made for the country of Qatar, advertising tourism and soccer. And this commercial, paid for by the country in question, put my mind to rest on this one…. Kuh-tar! (Now on to Kiev (Kee-ev)!“
