The confederate flag was flown during the Civil War when 11 states broke from the nation to defend the practice of slavery. And most recently it has been claimed by white supremacists and other hate groups , such as those who stormed our capitol on January 6. It has been used by the Ku Klux Klan for decades. In 1956, two years after the Supreme Court had declared school segregation illegal, the state of Georgia incorporated the battle flag into its official state flag as a symbol of resistance to integration. In 1960, when six-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to attend an all-white school in the South, she was met by crowds of white people who threw stones at her, called her the N-word, and waved the Confederate flag. So I laugh at those who say the flag represents Southern Heritage. For black southerners it certainly represents their southern heritage - terror, torture, and oppression.
