I think you are intentionally mischaracterizing " Al Gore (and the others)" as being afraid of debate. They just don't want to waste their time talking with those who only want a platform to spew their misinformation and will never accept truth over ideology.
As to data, it was data from years of global studies that brought the subject in the first place.
