I think the issue is about Meggison being two lanes south of sawgrass - not about the fastest way to the turnpike. From 44 to sawgrass, Meggison is four lanes with dedicated paths for golf carts. This seems safer for cars, golf carts, bikes, and pedestrians.
South of sawgrass, you have people driving to Citrus Grove, Newell, Lake Denham, and Dabney on a two lane highway with golf cart lanes in the roadway. I think that everyone would agree that a four lane highway (with two lanes in each direction and a median in between) is much safer than a two lane highway (with no median). Was the design change to save money or to make the road safer?
