Tried for YEARS, nothing you can do. From "tree trimmers" , to "free roof" people , lawn mowers, frozen meat sellers, etc. etc. At least 4 a week, sometimes 2-3 in a DAY. Public streets, public community, "gates" are looks/selling point only, so give the illusion of a "private" community, so, as many door to door people as care to can canvas as much as they desire. As for "unsavory looking" ? Pretty qualitative, doubt police would even consider such a qualitative call legitimate...LOL ! If you're new, wish I could tell you it will get better, believe me, it will not ! Sorry.
