I think aphasia was the more polite term they chose to use to break the news. It is less dramatic and embarrassing than dementia. The aphasia was, and is a component of the particular dementia diagnosis he's been given. They released information about him in bits and pieces- each time giving slightly more 'dramatic' information each time. I cared for demented patients for 40 years. Sorry to say this is a very unpleasant way to die.
