One tragic fact about the nearly 1 million people who died of COVID-19 in the U.S. is that a huge share of them didn't have to.
In Tennessee, 11,047 of the people who died could have survived if everyone in the state had gotten vaccinated. In Ohio, that number is 15,875. Nationally it's nearly 319,000, according a new estimate.

... between January 2021 and April 2022, vaccines could have prevented at least 318,000 Covid-19 deaths. This means that at least every second person who died from Covid-19 since vaccines became available might have been saved by getting the shot.

You forgot the "could have" been averted... and "could have prevented"... and "might have" been saved.... It's a guess...
And no, hospitals were not overrun by patients "drowning in their own respiratory secretions"...
In NYC, they spent $Billions on readying a hospital ship and a New Covid Tent facility. Neither were needed.
In DC, where I work, as well as Suburban MD & VA, the local hospitals had plenty of beds available...
