I'm not convinced that the Developer's newspaper cancelled Dilbert. Dilbert was likely cancelled by a content coordinator that organizes, arranges, and pays for the comic strip page by paying for individual strips and organizing them into a collection of comic strips aka funny pages and then sells that content to various newspapers. I doubt that the Developer's newspaper (or any other) seeks out and contracts with a few dozen individual comic strip writer/illustrators. More likely a third party does all this and then sells the created funny pages to newspapers or newspaper groups.
