We have a 2,500 watt Westinghouse generator from Home Depot that will run everything in the house except the A/C, and I figure that we can get by w/o A/C for the period of time it might take for the power to come back up.

Be sure if you go the portable route that you get an inverter generator. A conventional generator w/o an inverter (or so I've been told) will mess with anything in your home that is computer-controlled, and in this day and age that is about everything except the lights and portable fan.
