They did. I remember my parents’ reaction to the Ed Sullivan show the first time the Beatles appeared. Not complimentary.
Nevertheless rap “music” has earned its negative reputation. It didn’t start that way. Remember M.C. Hammer and “Can’t Touch This”? Sort of pre-rap, maybe. But rap as evolved (devolved?) into an art form where things like abuse of women, drug use, crime, etc. etc. are glorified. Rap has in effect become the anthem of people that I and many others I know want nothing to do with.
