Read about fetal brain development and differences between male and female brains. If a brain develops one way while the body develops another there is a conflict - the way you look and the way you are treated doesn't match the way you feel. You can't change the structure of your brain but you can change your outward appearance.

Since brains start with female characteristics and develop into male brains, the most common conflict is when this doesn't happen. The brain has a more female structure while the body develops as male. Someone who changes their outward structure to better align the two is known as a trans-woman.

This has nothing to do with sexual desires. This not a sin. This is not deviant behavior. This is not something that can be "cured" through deprogramming. This is not a choice any more than left-handedness is a choice.

Things might be better for these people if our social norms were changed. If we stopped demanding that those with male characteristics behave one way and those with female characteristics behave a different way. If society was more accepting of those who were different then there wouldn't be as much pressure to look the part you feel you need to play. Unfortunately, acceptance of those who are different hasn't caught on yet.

Confirmation bias is real; I can find any number of articles that say so.
