Not sure how you got that. Disney doesn’t charge $150 for park hopping or the “ride pass”. The ride pass (genie+) has never been more than $30. Universal charges over $100 usually. Plus, you are adding park hopping because of poor planning ( your park was sold out) so you can’t really count that as the normal cost to visit for a day. I’m not saying Disney is cheap but it isn’t $500 a day.
To the OP, we often stayed in a townhouse or condo in Windsor Hills. It is very close to the gate and while it isn’t on property, it was actually nice to get away from the stimulation for a swim or nap. It was usually the price of a value resort on property but everyone gets their own room, you have a kitchen, etc. I hope your grands get a nice vacation.
