But in my not-so-humble opinion, vanity is the primary motivator here. Before we moved to TV my wife's hairdresser was located in Duluth, MN and we lived south of the Twin Cities (both of us lived for several years in Duluth, which is where we met). Every six weeks, like clockwork, we'd drive the 400 mile round trip to Duluth and back so my wife could get her hair done. It wasn't a chore: we'd make a day of it, doing some shopping, eating at favorite restaurants, etc., and it was a day we could spend together (work life made that iffy, sometimes). But the cost was $140 per session with the hairdresser. We thought for years that we were the only ones doing that. Not even close. One woman drove up to Duluth from Iowa for the privilege.
Me? $20 covers a cut AND tip by Tom at Cal's Barber Shop in LSL. Perfectly satisfactory. Then again, men aren't as vain as some (most?) women appear to be.

That must have been a tough drive in the winter.
