Here is my "go to" for friend requests. Do I know you now? Do I want to know you? Imagine if someone just walked up to you and said "wanna be friends?" You'd think those same thoughts, but of course, in person there's an opportunity to better answer them. Earlier poster said it all; those who collect "friends" may want to become influencers or just have the collecting spirit. If you are talking FB, you can "unfriend" someone without it being a public event (unlike in real life!). Not sure about other platforms, but as they all compete with each other, it's probably an option there as well.
