I'm going to have to call BS on that statement. You must have gotten that nonsense from your favorite propaganda station years ago. That
may have been true back when the first hybrids came out and used lead-acid batteries, but it's not true for Lithium-ion batteries.
Here's the concluding paragraph from a Car and Driver article last year:
