The final word: An amateur cook who would like to think he/she was at least occasionally a real life chef has a KitchenAid. You may not have all 4,742 attachments, but you do have the beaters, the whisk, and the dough hook. But you don't have to use them for the stuff they're meant. 
OH - added -- also, they look really neat on a bachelor's kitchen counter. Girls/women tend to think you cook and stuff and don't mind as much that you aren't a clean freak.
