I had same problem when I switched internet service from Verizon to Spectrum. The standard Spectrum router was dual band, both 2.4 and 5 however I was unable to choose which was being used to connect a device, the router was making the choice. Most smart plugs use the older 2.4. After discussion with several people at tech support at Spectrum, my solution was to return their router and purchase my own router with the capability of choosing which band I was connecting any device to. Once I did that and tried connecting my smart plugs to the 2.4 band, all was fine
