Actually, mining for uranium and mercury went on in that caldera in the middle of nowhere for much of the 20th century. The size f that lithium deposit at the Thacker Pass part of the caldera was discovered in 2007, and the Bureau of Land Management cleared it so mining could begin in 2021. So this is not a new discovery, as your source claims. However, the majority shareholder in the privately-owned company that has the rights to mine there is CHINESE! So our American lithium will mostly enrich China, even if used in American cars. I don’t know it most people realize it, but China has a number of brands of cars made there, and the most popular models are EV, by far, and huge numbers of EVs made in China are being sold in Europe. This is expected to double in the next year.
