Also Apple would not do operating systems updates anymore. So I got a new mini with the most memory available. The only problem was Apple wanted 3 times the cost of the mini for their monitor. I did some research and found out they had been using a Dell monitor before theirs came out. So I ordered a 27 inch Dell for less that half the price of the mini. The only cons about doing this is there is no camera and the sound in both the mini and monitor suck, solved that with a $15 speaker set.
While I was able to upgrade my iMac 21 inch screen (not sure why yours was different), I had the exact same experience. Every point you made, bought mac mini and the Dell monitor, needed speakers and a camera (I haven't gotten the camera, don't want you all watching me).
