Your point about HD's size and staying power would be one of the biggest motivators to go with them, but we have also seen some positive comments on TOTV about their counter work as well as from our cabinet installer, who is a smaller independent doing work throughout the Villages. If you need to pay for materials, use a credit card. Any reputable contractor should accept a credit card for an advance payment. If they won't, I wouldn't do business with them. You have 60 days from the statement date to dispute a credit card charge. If you do it correctly, there is no risk to you.
