A running toilet can be caused by one of two problems. Most likely, it is caused by a defective gasket or flapper at the bottom of the tank. These are easy to replace. Another possibility is that you have a leaking fill valve, which requires replacement of the plastic pipe and valve mechanism usually located on the left side of the tank. This is a more difficult repair, but it is still a relatively easy DIY project. If the toilet is running continually, you will be wasting a lot of water.
