That's definitely the old time tested way to do it, my mother and grand mothers (both) always used that. I find my self cleaning oven reduces the encrusted materials to such a fine powder, I just take them out after they completely cool and the oven "unlocks", and the dust residue left is so fine it can be quickly brushed off as if it was talcum powder . If no self clean feature, ? Then the ammonia process definitely works... OUTSIDE !
