Can understand "if it isn't broke do not go trying to fix" but if the existing heater tank is 10 years or older and you have not performed any regular maintenance in that time it could have internal problems. Some visible signs of a aged/ready to change water heater could be: leaks, rusty or cloudy water quality, not getting very hot water, noises coming from the tank, and visible rust/corrosion on the tank around the bottom.
