You have slightly misstated the actual wording of the "study". What it stated was that slow drivers are "more likely to be involved in" an accident, not that they necessarily "caused" the accident.

The poster of which you speak, and I ,had a lengthy back and forth on this difference. Even he agreed eventually that this statistic may well reflect the likelihood that "slow" drivers are driving slowly because they are aged and recognize that they don't see so well, their reflexes aren't what they used to be etc. etc.

The study also stated that while they may be involved in more accidents, it did not study the severity of accidents, and the relationship between severity and speed.
