We're rapidly moving to be a society in which dissent is not tolerated and those that dare to speak up are silenced. Dr Mitchell Taylor has been researching the status and management of polar bears in Canada and around the Arctic Circle for 30 years, as both an academic and a government employee.

Max Mayfield, the now retired long term-director of the National Hurricane Center, and Dr. William Gray, the man who has been the leader in hurricane prediction, stopped receiving NOAA funding when they published a paper saying that if global warming is true, it has shown no sign of increasing hurricane frequency or strength. They suggested the way to control hurricane damage was to stop building on or near the coastline.

These instances of attempting to stifle dissent are unnerving by themselves, but they come of even greater concern when you read this posted in the influential liberal blog: Talking Points Memo:

What is so frustrating about these fools is that they are the politicians and greedy bastards who don't want a cut in their profits who use bogus science or the lowest scientists in the gene pool who will distort data for a few bucks. The vast majority of the scientific minds in the World agree and understand it's a very serious problem that can do an untold amount of damage to life on Earth.
So when the right wing ****tards have caused it to be too late to fix the problem, and we start seeing the devastating consequences and we start seeing end of the World type events - how will we punish those responsible. It will be too late. So shouldn't we start punishing them now?

While these may appear to be extremist outburst, they unfortunately are not.
