Of course that is what you were taught as a child, you're parents primary objective was keeping you safe - NOT - teaching you the rules of the road.

When the boys were little, they would hear a car coming & would say "Car coming, car coming" & dash off to the side. Now that they are twenty somethings they no longer yell out "Car coming" & rush off to the side. They both know how to drive & walk safely. But I'd assume they are aware of their surroundings & if an out of control car/bike/person came their way they'd scramble.
