I break down restaurant into 3 types.
Fine dining where a person spends a lot of money to enjoy the experience.

You know what is going into your meal, who is preparing it and if want you can eat your meal in your underwear.

While I agree with you that the best meals are the ones we prepare our selves, In most homes here in TV, the least used room is the kitchen. We have always enjoyed cooking and work together in the kitchen. Of course, we have to agree who is the chef and who is the sous chef on any given recipe.
