Unfortunately, IMHO, you may not know if the roofer was good for a few years after the roof was installed, some mistakes take that long to show up. When I get ready to do the roof replacement, I will be researching the BBB as well as Seniors Against Crime, and any other suitable resources that show long term suitability of the roofer. I will then confirm the quality of the materials used, and mention that I will be taking HIGH resolution pictures of the work in progress, this is to insure the correct number of nails per shingle and the correct location of the nails. I may even go so far as to ask a home inspector to stop by and take a look. I will also be carefully reviewing any warranty offered and the terms of the warranty.
As you can tell I am not looking forward to this task.
