The first one was fabulous, the first "follow up" was interesting, but nothing like the original based on the novel. It is very expensive to make Hollywood movies, so the companies rely on sequels to bring in cash. They don't need new ideas, frequently refuse to pay the original screen writer's asking salary, don't need much of an advertising budget as the original paved the way with audiences, simply put they are most often low quality cash cows.
