Yes, we did install roll down shades (manual) in our screened in lanai, this is very similar to the birdcage we installed later as the shades were mounted to the aluminum rails. IMHO if your spacing is in the range of the 'cooleroo' shades (Lowe's or Home depot) this is the way I would go now. We went the full custom route and spent a lot more money than we should have. If you are not handy, there are several handyman that can install these.
