Harley Davidsons don't have to sound like log trucks, their riders just like it that way because they want to act tough and be noticed. They are the height of 1930's technology gone wrong, lets say stuck in time and performance. This is coming from someone who in his younger days did install a few sets of drag pipes, stoker kits and piles of chrome on my own bikes, thankfully I came to my senses in my early 30s and left that mess behind for the teenagers and infirmed of mind. I also dig the older technology, my tractor is a 1941 and my Dodge is a 1942 design. I for one strongly dislike loud pipes on sports cars, redneck pickups (I have one currently) log trucks (read that as Harleys) as well as rice grinders when ridden in public. Put them on a drag strip or other race track and I'm happy to hear the noise. I attend drag and drives and thoroughly enjoy that time and group. The car/bike community has consistently been the best group of people I've ever encountered.

I've spent a lot of time around bikers of all kinds, much like the rest of society you will find good and bad in each group. In fact, I've known some that were great people until the moment they throw a leg over and some that are the opposite. As I sit and think about it I'd say I've known the extreme in each direction as biker friends or acquaintances.
Mod, you will be happy to know I left out several colorful and inappropriate werds in my descriptions above, I'm doing better
