It's also very useful if I'm taking a left immediately after the gate, since the visitor's lane is the left lane, and the resident's lane is the right lane.
Conversely - if I'm taking a right immediately after the gate, I always get in the resident's lane on the right.
At the Boone gate, it actually matters since the cross street is Paradise, and that's the main road that runs parallel to 441 on the Historic side. Traffic there can be pretty awkward. Cars coming in from 441 do NOT have a stop sign at the intersection. Their stop sign upon their approach to the gate. Once that gate is up, they are supposed to move and /not/ stop.
