The timing on that gate has been changed. You'd now have to sit there for 45 seconds. Meanwhile, I DO have a valid gate card, and I DO use it. However, there's no need to, if the gate is still open from the person who came in only seconds before I did.
In addition, if the person behind you, does hold their card up, and you didn't happen to notice them do that, and the gate is open legitimately for THEM - then YOU are holding them up, because you've chosen to play traffic cop.
The only time I've ever tried to prevent someone from coming through is if the gate is already closed, and they ask me to swipe them in.
